Did you know that the Extra is one of the oldest beers in Westmalle? What's more, it belongs to a long tradition as old as the brewery self. We jump back in time to 1836. That year the Trappists of Westmalle decided to brew their own. They needed their own local drink to accompany the meal. In our part of the world it was only logical that that would become beer. All this in line with the monastic rules of Saint Benedict, which is the guiding principle for the way of life of the Trappists. So the monks started brewing, which first resulted in a dark table beer. We know from writings that a white beer turned up a while later. At the beginning of the 20th century, there was talk of a blond 'Extra-Gersten' beer: a predecessor of the Extra. In all that time, a lighter version was invariably on the table at the monks themselves. They gladly granted the Dubbel and Tripel to the outside world, but within the abbey walls they opted for austere quality that better reflects their lifestyle.
