You can almost hear the heartbeat of whisky as Macallan lies in the central district of whisky making territory. This distillery which was built in 1824 near the river Spey in a tranquil Speyside setting is owned by Edrington & William Grant & Sons. Now Macallan 50 Years Old is most famous for being James Bond’s favourite dram so something special is truly happening behind the closed doors of this distillery which is magical. Macallan is a name in whisky that is held at the highest regard and delivers time and time again. Macallan is well known for ageing its whiskies in sherry casks and the double cask core range celebrates maturation of two types of ex-sherry casks. Using European oak and American oak both previously used to mature Oloroso sherry. The two types of oak create a smooth single malt with dried fruits, citrus and chocolate with a lasting spice and honey sweetness.
Nose: Orange cake, ginger syrup, vanilla toffee, dried orchard fruits, caramelised figs and spice.
Palate: Raisins and sultanas bound together with caramel and vanilla anglaise, spices of ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon, orange citrus and spiced oak.
Finish: Warm spices, balanced oak and chocolate orange.
