With its pink-rust glow, BK Saignée first stirs your thoughts and your heart where the final moments of a sunset would. Rose petals, very ripe watermelons, musk, and hard strawberry lollies on the nose and with weight and complexity on the palate. This wine is our first glance at the 2024 vintage and tells us that this year’s Pinot Noirs are more cologne than perfume and with broad, attractive appeal. Wines made in places with an older vinous tradition than Australia’s are almost evolutionarily adapted to the food of the place. Here, though, they can so often be mouth-filling to the point of being a meal unto themselves. If you’ve had the full meal before you’ve lifted the fork, where is there to explore? With our Saignée we’re appealing to senses over satiation. A café on the Cinque Terra to start; cinnamon, allspice and quince paste Christmas as it evolves. Take your time, enjoy with food… then take a bit more time and call in some friends. With food.
