Already a star in the world whisky scene after just ten years, Kavalan Distillery has now released the very first Taiwan-inspired gin. Employing botanicals sourced from Yilan, just outside Taipei including kumquat peel, dried star fruit and red-flesh guava botanical extracts, the mix also includes juniper, aniseed and coriander. Produced using a malted barley base spirit, Master Distiller, Ian Chang adds “Above all, I wanted this Gin to be refreshing and elegant. Imagine taking a dip in a crystal pool on an intense summer's day. That's what I had in mind for the experience of drinking Kavalan Gin.” The final result is double charcoal-filtered and triple distilled.
Tasting note: Clear. Unusual floral / fruity aromas hint at elderflower, feijoa or tangerine peel? A light to medium bodied gin with atypical flavours suggesting orange sherbet, elderflower and frail juniper. Finish is soft, rounded, brisk and slightly soapy. Rose petal, subtle citrus peel and elderflower-like notes through the aftertaste. A fruity, idiosyncratic style that departs from traditional London Dry.
